The Automobile and Its Impact on the Environment

The Automobile, also known as a car is a motor vehicle used to transport people. It has four wheels and can seat one to eight passengers. The automotive industry was first developed in the late 19th century with many inventors and engineers working to create a self-propelled vehicle that could be driven on roads. Although steam-powered road vehicles existed earlier, the automobile revolution was triggered by the introduction of the internal combustion engine in the 1860s and ’70s. During this time, the United States began to dominate the automobile market. By 1920, Henry Ford had innovated mass production techniques at his Highland Park plant. Ford, General Motors and Chrysler became the Big Three automakers.

As the automobile industry expanded, more roads were built and industries grew to supply parts and fuel for cars. Services like gas stations and convenience stores were founded as well. Families gained freedom to travel and explore more of the country as the automobile allowed them to visit places that would have been impossible before. The automobile even changed social behavior and attitudes. Dating couples could drive off together to spend time alone and teenagers gained independence with their new driving freedom.

The newest automobiles often boast state-of-the-art safety features that are designed to protect the driver and passengers. Some of these features include airbags, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control. Other new technological developments are making the automobile safer and more comfortable. For instance, automatic windows and GPS navigation systems have become common. Other manufacturers are designing cars that are quieter and have more efficient engines.

While the automobile has numerous benefits, it also has a huge impact on our environment. Automobiles consume a lot of energy to produce and they leave a large carbon footprint. A large part of this carbon footprint is from tailpipe emissions, but it is also from the materials that go into a car. Automobiles are made of steel, rubber, glass, plastic and many other materials. Some of these materials are made from fossil fuels, which require a lot of energy to produce.

The car is a vital mode of transportation for many people. It can get people to work, school, shopping and other activities. It can also be a symbol of status and wealth. If you live in a densely populated area, then it may not be possible to use public transportation or to walk, so owning a car is often a necessity. Cars also offer the ability to transport things that cannot be carried on foot or by public transportation, such as sports equipment and luggage.
